Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon chaired a meeting at the Central Police Office on 11-July-2025 to review police progress in ransom kidnapping and extortion cases, and arrest of wanted and absconding accused in murder cases.
The meeting was briefed on ransom kidnapping cases by the CIA DIG in Karachi and the divisional DIGs in their respective districts. They said kidnappings have almost come to an end in Karachi.
However, only three cases of ransom demand through honey trapping are under investigation in the city, while the AVCC SSP is present in the Kutcha area for the safe recovery of the victims. Moreover, regular awareness measures are being taken in passenger vehicles, and at bus terminals and other public places to ensure people’s safety from honey trapping.
The meeting was told that no ransom kidnapping group is active or present in Karachi, but extortion complaints have been received from some districts of the city, most of which are related to money transactions.
Moreover, a few complaints are related to a specific extortion group, so a formal strategy and action plan have been formulated to eliminate this group as soon as possible. IG Memon ordered that the few honey trapping and kidnapping cases in the Kutcha areas be brought to zero by ensuring the use of all available facilities and resources.
He said police of the Sukkur and Larkana divisions should tighten the noose around the honey trapping and kidnapping group under a joint strategy to ensure the use of technology and picketing along the Kutcha routes.
The Sindh government not only wants permanent peace in the province, especially in the Kutcha areas, but it is also making serious efforts keeping in mind all its priorities, he added. He told the CTD Addl IG to mobilise his department against extortion gangs in interior Sindh. He also said honey trapping has become an effective means of ransom kidnapping, so it must be effectively curbed.
Memon said that since the last meeting, all efforts made to arrest the wanted and absconding accused in murder cases have been good, but it is imperative to continue this trend. He instructed all the DIGs and SSPs to ensure weekly tasking of police stations regarding the arrest of the wanted and absconding accused, and the registration of FIRs over other serious crimes, including extortion and vehicle thefts, without any delay.
He said police are criticised due to fugitives and wanted suspects being involved in most of the crimes. “However, don’t be afraid of criticism, report crimes and continue to take action against criminal elements.”
