Woman Seeking Custody of Daughter ‘Raped by SHO’ in Mirpurkhas

HYDERABAD: A young woman seeking custody of her minor daughter has accused a police officer in Mirpurkhas of raping her. The accused officer was immediately suspended and FIR was registered against him.

According to sources, the Mirpurkhas police on October 25 registered an FIR on the complaint of 24-year-old woman, a resident of Punjab, against SHO Mir Khadim Talpur of Mehran police station. The FIR also names an unidentified person – later identified as ASI Faisal Mahar — for alleged connivance in the offence.

A civil judge and judicial magistrate in Mirpurkhas on Sunday granted four-day physical remand of Mahar. The main accused, SHO Talpur, remained at large.

In her complaint, the victim stated that she had approached the Mehran police station for assistance in recovering her daughter Alisha, who is in the custody of her ex-husband in Umerkot district. She alleged that during her last visit, the SHO lured her with false assurances and took her to an unknown location, where he allegedly subjected her to sexual assault.

The complainant said she was later dropped back at the police station in a vehicle driven by an unidentified man. Following the incident, SSP Mirpurkhas Sumer Noor Channa suspended the SHO, who has since gone into hiding, while ASI Mahar has been taken into custody.

Police said DNA samples of the accused and the complainant have been collected and sent to the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro for testing. Clothes allegedly worn by the SHO at the time of the assault have also been recovered as evidence.

An initial medical report prepared at the Civil Hospital found no visible signs of physical torture, though officials said the final findings would depend on forensic results.

DSP Satellite Town Aslam Jagirani, who is leading the investigation, said the victim had earlier submitted an application to the DIG Mirpurkhas for the recovery of her daughter. He added that the SHO had twice attempted but failed to retrieve the child before allegedly misusing the woman’s contact information.

“She was called to the police station at 10pm on the day of the incident,” the DSP said, adding that the investigation is underway to determine the role of the driver who drove the victim.
