The Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in Hyderabad faces a critical shortage of doctors, staff, and essential infrastructure. The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sent proposals for immediate action to the provincial health department after uncovering multiple issues during a recent visit.
Key Issues:
– Shortage of psychiatrists and staff members
– Budget constraints and outdated infrastructure
– Only 2 ambulances available, purchased 30 years ago
The SHRC has written to the Secretary Health on 16 April 2024 to address the gaps with following key recommendations:
– Immediate hiring of medical personnel and staff
– Increased budget allocation
– Upgrade institute’s infrastructure and collaborate for skill-based education
