Senator Sherry Rehman, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Environmental Change in the Senate, addressed a seminar on environmental pollution and its impact on heart health via video link.
In her address, Senator Rehman emphasized the growing threat of air pollution to cardiovascular health, highlighting the serious health risks associated with polluted air, said a press release issued on 24 January 2025.
She stated that air pollution has become a major threat to human heart health, contributing significantly to heart diseases, strokes, and high blood pressure. She pointed out alarming statistics, revealing that 79% of deaths caused by air pollution are linked to heart disease or stroke. She explained how harmful toxins like PM 2.5 and nitrogen oxides in polluted air directly damage blood vessels, elevating the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The senator acknowledged the efforts of the Sindh government, particularly in promoting heart health through initiatives and actions aimed at improving public well-being. She praised the work of NICVD (National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases) and SICVD (Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases), noting that both institutions are doing excellent work in treating heart diseases. “NICVD treats 1.3 million patients annually, positioning it as an essential national asset,” she said.
Discussing the urgent need for action, Senator Rehman highlighted the importance of reducing the risks of environmental pollution and cardiovascular diseases. She emphasized that efforts must be made at both governmental and individual levels to tackle the growing environmental threat. The senator called for the adoption of renewable energy sources, like solar energy, and measures to reduce harmful emissions, particularly from industries, to help alleviate air pollution.
Senator Rehman also recommended improving fuel efficiency in vehicles and ensuring their proper maintenance to reduce air pollution. Finally, she stressed the importance of public awareness in mitigating the harmful effects of air pollution on heart health, urging citizens to take responsibility for their environment and health.
