A man and his nephew were shot dead and another man was critically injured after a young couple eloped and married against their families’ wishes.
According to police, the attackers reportedly riding two motorcycles opened fire on the victims, killing 30-year-old Shaman Ali, son of Abdul, and his uncle 40-year-old Ishaq Hussain, son of Balaj Jatoi, on the spot. The third victim, 45-year-old Habib, son of Balaj Jatoi, was seriously injured and shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital along with the bodies by a Chhipa ambulance.
Manghopir SHO Imran Khan confirmed that Ali was the nephew of Ishaq, while Habib was Ishaq’s brother. The incident is tied to a love marriage, he said, adding that Ali had eloped from Bolan, Balochistan, with a woman named Saima, and the couple had taken residence in Muhammad Khan Colony just three days ago.
Police said four armed suspects, identified as Ghulam Sarwar, Sadiq, Abdul Salam and Ghulam Haider, pursued the couple and the groom’s uncles on two motorcycles.
Upon spotting them, the victims tried to escape, but the assailants opened fire, killing Shaman and one of his uncles instantly while injuring the other. The attackers then abducted Saima and fled the scene.
All the suspects and victims belong to the Jatoi tribe, which indicates that the incident may have been driven by tribal and honour-based motives. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest the suspects, and have also taken into custody the person who had provided shelter to the couple.
