Police on 19 August 2024 claimed to have arrested a man for his alleged involvement in last month’s shooting at a filling station that had left a rider of a ride-hailing service dead.
Officials claimed that the suspect and his accomplice were involved in killing a rider and injuring a filling station employee in Ghazi Goth, Scheme 33. Police said the arrested suspect has been identified as Tufail, adding that the man is addicted to drugs. The search for the other suspect is underway, they added.
According to details, the two suspects on a motorbike had stopped at the filling station on July 24 to refuel, and an argument broke out between an employee and the suspects. As the suspects were leaving, they opened fire at the filling station, resulting in the death of Zeeshan, a rider present at the scene, and injuries to Umair, an employee.
“Since the day the incident occurred, we’ve been trying to trace and arrest the suspects,” District East Investigation SSP Aleena Rajpar told The News. “We utilised our spy information network, along with circumstantial evidence, witness statements, CCTV camera footage, and technical data to identify the suspects.” The officer said the police then deployed their informers to the areas where the suspects’ possible movements were reported and were able to arrest one of the suspects.
“The arrested suspect was driving the motorbike, while his accomplice had fired the shots. We have also identified the whereabouts of the accomplice, and he will be in police custody soon.” The SSP said the arrested suspect has admitted to his crime, claiming that they were under the influence of alcohol, which led to the incident. She said the suspects are habitual drinkers, adding that the detainee is being interrogated, while raids are being conducted to arrest his accomplice.
