Sindh Chief Minister’s Special Assistant on Food Abdul Jabbar Khan has assured that there is no wheat flour crisis in the province, as over 13 million bags of wheat are currently stocked in government warehouses — sufficient to meet Sindh’s needs.
Speaking to media on September 03, Khan said the chief minister was personally monitoring the wheat situation. While no wheat release policy had yet been announced, a new policy would be finalised in the upcoming cabinet meeting in response to the recent hike in flour prices.
He said the price of a 100-kg wheat bag currently stands at Rs9,400 and could rise further in the future. Responding to a query, he clarified that although Punjab had restricted wheat transportation to other provinces, Sindh faced no shortage due to its adequate reserves. He added that precautionary measures had been taken for low-lying areas in Katcha that might be affected by rains or flooding.
Khan dismissed concerns of wheat theft or mismanagement, stressing that all government stocks were safe and fully documented. He further said that under the directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the provincial government was committed to providing relief to the public.
Highlighting potential challenges, he noted that rising bank interest rates could impact wheat and flour prices, but the Sindh government was preparing a comprehensive strategy to counter this. The CM’s aide reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stabilising wheat flour prices and ensuring transparent distribution so that the people of Sindh did not face any hardships.
