PEBS Conducts Eye Screening of 30,000 Schoolchildren in Six Months

KARACHI: In line with the mission to eradicate blindness, Pakistan Eye Bank Society (PEBS) has completed eye screening of 30,000 schoolchildren as part of its school eye clinic project.

The project is being run in collaboration with Rotary Club of Heidelberg Schloss, Germany, said a press release issued here on December 15.

It described the screening as a milestone recognition of achieving 50 percent target of eye examination of 60,000 students in a year.

A gratification ceremony was held at PEBS Hospital, Karachi on December 15 to commemorate accomplishment of 50pc eye examination of schoolchildren within six months.

Speaking as the chief guest, Germany’s Consul General in Karachi Thomas Schultze lauded the efforts of the PEBS.

He said Germany and Pakistan enjoy very friendly relations and both countries are not only close business partners but are also collaborate in the social sector.

About the school eye clinic project, he said that such initiatives will improve child health enabling them to continue their career and life more effectively.

Rotary Club of Heidelberg Schloss President Dr Tilman Krauch sent an online message.

PEBS President Qazi Sajid Ali highlighted the services of his organisation since its inception in 1968.

Describing the result of the school eye clinic project as alarming, he said the screenings showed 28pc eye disorders in children.

He appealed to the federal government to frame a national policy for eye and medical screening of schoolchildren at an early age.

British Deputy High Commissioner Lance Domm and German diplomat’s wife Katja Heusel also spoke on the occasion.
