A committee member told The Express Tribune that several papers contained nonsensical answers
KARACHI.
The fact-finding committee formed by the Sindh Assembly to investigate irregularities in the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) results visited the board office on 6 February.
The committee checked exam papers of students who had scored 85 percent or higher in their matric exams but had left blank or written irrelevant answers in their Inter Part-I pre-medical and pre-engineering exams.
A committee member told The Express Tribune that several papers contained nonsensical answers. One paper featured lyrics of a film song, while another included a student’s personal account of their family situation.
The committee, led by NED University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Surosh Hashmat Lodhi, also assessed the academic standards at the inter-level, raising several inquiries regarding the examination process and evaluation system.
Besides reviewing the student’s performance, the committee is scrutinising matric results of those who claim to have achieved A-1 grades but displayed poor or irrelevant responses in their intermediate exams. The investigation extends to evaluating the effectiveness of BIEK’s academic and affiliation committees.
A key area of focus for the committee is determining whether the board’s affiliation committee conducts proper inspections of public and private colleges, assessing their academic standards and facilities, or merely completes the process on paper.
Other members of the committee include Noman Ahsan, Chairman of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee, and Safi Ahmed Zaki, Controller of Examinations at NED University. The committee’s findings are expected to reveal potential discrepancies in the examination and evaluation system, aiming to ensure greater transparency and accountability within BIEK.
