The Sindh High Court has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take concrete steps to prevent and remove objectionable content from social media platforms.
A two-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Ageel Ahmed Abbasi, issued the directive on Wednesday, putting the PTA, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and other respondents, as well as the deputy attorney general, on notice for February 20.
The move follows concerns raised by YouTube vloggers who approached the court, highlighting the presence of “objectionable, unethical, immoral, and unlawful” content on social media platforms.
The petitioners’ counsel argued that the PTA has the authority to remove and block such content under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, and the Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content Rules, 2021. However, the PTA has failed to take prompt action, leading to the filing of the petition.
In response, the bench ordered the respondents to ensure that all relevant laws and rules related to preventing, blocking, and removing objectionable online content are implemented and necessary action is taken in accordance with the law. The court also requested a report on the matter to be submitted on the next date.
