The Sindh government’s Directorate of Literacy and Non-Formal Education in collaboration with The NGO World Foundation (TNWF) organised a grand letter of understanding (LoU) signing ceremony on October 24 for the establishment of 133 non-formal education (NFE) centres in the Karachi region.

Officials said the event took place at the Beach Luxury Hotel and marked a major step forward in the province’s mission to promote inclusive and equitable education. The ceremony celebrated the partnership between the Türkiye Diyanet Vakf (TDV) and the Sindh school education department underscoring joint efforts to expand access to education for out-of-school children.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Turkish Consul General Ergul Kadak and Dr Abdul Rehman Akkus, TDV country head of religious presidencies affairs. Other key guests included Dr Alam Khan and Sindh School Education Secretary Zahid Ali Abbasi, who graced the event as the chief guest and commended the collaborative efforts for advancing literacy and improving educational access for underprivileged urban communities in Malir and Korangi.

He reiterated the department’s commitment to ensuring inclusive, equitable and quality education for every child in Sindh. In his address, Literacy and Non-Formal Education Director Abdul Jabbar Marri shared that under the leadership of the education minister, the directorate had successfully established 500 NFE centres across Sindh.

He further announced the launch of 133 new centres in Karachi aimed at providing accelerated learning programmes (ALP) to bring out-of-school children into the education system. He reaffirmed that with strong leadership and commitment, the Sindh government was fully aligned with its Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4) targets. The ceremony also featured souvenir presentations by the TNWF to distinguished guests and shields of appreciation for learners, facilitators and members of the organising team.

Additional Director Dr Fozia Khan, JICA Provincial Coordinator Habibullah Khaskheli and representatives of various NGOs and education-related institutions also participated in the event that concluded with a collective pledge to strengthen partnerships and sustain efforts to ensure that no child in Sindh was left out of school.
