Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has said that without doctors and engineers, life in this world would be impossible, as humanity would be reduced to living like animals.
Speaking at a seminar and health carnival organised by Dr Shireen Bhutta Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health & Research on September 06, Ghani said that while the provincial government has done significant work in the health sector, there is still a great deal more to accomplish.
He announced that the provincial government has decided to establish a dedicated institute for children with disabilities. The largest of its kind in Pakistan, the project will cover 80 acres near Shahrah-e-Bhutto (Malir Expressway) in Karachi, he said.
During his visit to various stalls at the health carnival, he praised the efforts of medical professionals and health workers. Addressing the gathering, he expressed surprise at learning that a cancer-preventing vaccine has been developed, noting that through this vaccine, 4.1 million girls would be protected from the disease.
Despite criticism, he said, the Sindh government’s achievements in health care surpass those of other provinces, though further work is urgently required as health care is becoming so expensive that even the middle class struggles to afford it.
Responding to questions, he said institutions such as the Sindh Institute of Urology & Transplantation and the Indus Hospital receive government funding. Reiterating the government’s commitment, he said the planned institute for special children would be unprecedented in scale, larger than any similar facility elsewhere in the world.
